Internship Program

Internship Program at Gotham Psychotherapy

Gotham Psychotherapy offers a comprehensive and enriching internship program for graduate students pursuing degrees in Mental Health Counseling or Clinical Social Work. The program is designed to provide hands-on experience and mentorship, within a supportive and collaborative environment.

All therapy sessions are conducted in person. Gotham Psychotherapy operates Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and is committed to accommodating students’ scheduling needs with flexibility.


Program Components

Learning Objectives

  • Develop proficiency in intake assessments, diagnosing mental health disorders, progress notes, and treatment planning

  • Gain experience providing evidence-based individual counseling to diverse patient populations

  • Enhance clinical skills by applying a variety of techniques, including crisis intervention, risk assessment, and ethical decision-making

  • Understand the administrative aspects of private practice, including scheduling, record-keeping, and professional networking

Clinical Experience

Interns work directly with patients under the supervision of Group Practice Owner, Carla Mannino, LCSW-R, CAS, CCTP, CAMS. Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting intake assessments

  • Providing individual counseling sessions

  • Writing progress notes

  • Developing treatment plans

Documentation Standards

  • Interns are trained to produce CMS compliant documentation across all clinical records
  • Notes are timely, legible, and authenticated by the supervising provider
  • Documentation reflects clear linkage between diagnosis and services rendered
  • Records adhere to Evaluation and Management guidelines and HIPAA privacy and security requirements
  • Gotham Psychotherapy upholds this high standard of CMS compliant documentation as a core element of clinical training, preparing interns for the rigorous charting expectations of any future clinical setting

Supervision and Mentorship

  • Interns participate in weekly individual supervision and clinician conferences, focusing on case discussion, therapeutic interventions, diagnosis, treatment planning, and psychotropic medications

  • Interns attend operational and program meetings with Director of Operations, Talia Rosenberg, LCSW

  • Clinical oversight and case consultation are provided by Clinical Director, Margaret Goldsmith, LMHC

Team Culture and Community Engagement

Interns are invited to participate in practice wide events throughout the year, including:

  • The JPMorganChase Corporate Challenge, a philanthropic 3.5 mile race and the world's largest corporate running series, held each summer to promote workplace wellness and camaraderie while raising funds for local charities through the JPMorganChase Foundation, which donates to nonprofits in each host city on behalf of participating teams
  • A Potluck Dinner on World Food Day (October 16) in support of the United Nations World Food Programme, Gotham Psychotherapy's chosen philanthropic partner in the global effort to end hunger and uphold human dignity. Team members contribute dishes reflecting their cultural backgrounds and family traditions, turning the meal into a shared celebration of diversity and community
  • The annual Gotham Psychotherapy Holiday Cooking Event and Gift Exchange, a year end gathering in which clinicians, interns, and administrative staff collaboratively prepare a holiday meal and share it together, marking the close of the year and recognizing the team's collective contributions
